How The Taylor Swift-Katy Perry Feud Turned Into Friendship

From being best friends forever to dissing each other through their songs, Taylor Swift and Katy Perry have a feud most notorious in the pop world. Though they never publicly acknowledged the ongoing tensions between them, everything was blatantly obvious and was often interpreted well by fans. After all, the fans are smart enough to catch up on hints dropped by the popstars. This turbulent relationship went from various stages, take a look at the timeline of their feud:

September 2008

The first official photos of Katy Perry and Taylor Swift were at the MTV VMAs in 2008.

2009: The Best Friends

They were definitely friends back then. Katy and Taylor were seen together at awards ceremonies hanging out with other stars, giggling and having fun, tweeting salubrious things about each other, and wishing each other on their birthdays. The duo even together sang Katy’s song “Hot N Cold” on stage together during Taylor’s Fearless tour.

Swift paid Perry a compliment via Twitter. “Watching the Waking up in Vegas video,” she wrote. “I love Katy Perry. I think I’m going to hang her poster on my wall now.” Perry responded, “You’re as sweet as pie! Let’s write a song together about the subject we know best… for my new record. It’ll be brilliant.”

2009-2013: Both dated John Mayer

Taylor swift dated John Mayer who inspired her song “Dear John” with lyrics that included: “It was wrong, don’t you think nineteen’s too young to be played by your dark, twisted games when I loved you so.”

John started dating Katy Perry sometime after his breakup with Taylor Swift. She and John have broken up and reconciled a few times, and as current rumor stands, they got back together in early 2015.

March 2013: The dancers who ditched Taylor Swift for Katy Perry

A few months later Katy Perry was also happening to go on a world tour. And there are claims that those dancers approached Katy to ask if they might join her Prism tour. But it meant they had to leave Taylor’s tour half-way through.

Later on, Swift did an interview with Rolling Stone magazine and talked about how Bad Blood was about someone from the music industry and not an ex-boyfriend, saying the person did something “so horrible” that made them “straight-up enemies.” Rumors swirled that the person in question was Katy Perry.

“She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me,” she explained.

Swift said in that interview, “For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not.” “She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, ‘Are we friends, or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life?’

September 2014

Right after that article, Katy Perry posted a mystified message alluding to Regina George from “Mean Girls”.

Though neither singer explicitly commented on the supposed feud until this year, when Perry went on The Late Show With James Corden and confirmed the suspicions of her rocky relationship with Swift.”Honestly, it’s really like she started it and it’s time for her to finish it,” Katy spoke about the tension between the two stars in a Carpool Karaoke interview with James Corden.

“She started it, and it’s time for her to finish it,” Katy said.

May 2015

In an interview with The Telegraph, Swift said: “I’m never going to talk about her in my interview. It’s not going to happen.” She went on to add that it was natural that she has “enemies.” “It’s not real if someone appears to never have any issues with anyone,” she explained. “I have my friends. I have enemies.”

July 2015: A tweet after a long time

Vexed after the MTV Video Music Awards announced that year’s slate of nominees, Nicki Minaj tweeted, “If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year.” Consequently, Swift — seemingly taking Minaj’s comments as a personal attack on her “Bad Blood” nomination — responded: “I’ve done nothing but love & support you. It’s unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot. “The next day, Perry chimed in, though didn’t mention Swift by name. “Finding it ironic to parade the pit women against other women argument about as one unmeasurably capitalizes on the take down of a woman.” Later Minaj clarified that her comments were not meant to target Swift in any way.

October 2015: She clarifies “Bad Blood”

When a reporter for GQ pointed out that even though she doesn’t explicitly name names in her songs, Swift does allow the public to decide who she’s targeting, Swift responded:  “You’re in a Rolling Stone interview, and the writer says, ‘Who is that song about? That sounds like a really intense moment from your life.’ And you sit there, and you know you’re on good terms with your ex-boyfriend, and you don’t want him — or his family — to think you’re firing shots at him. So you say, ‘That was about losing a friend.’ And that’s basically all you say. But then people cryptically tweet about what you meant. I never said anything that would point a finger in the specific direction of one specific person.”

July 2016: Enters Calvin Harris

Producer and superstar DJ Calvin Harris was dating Taylor Swift but it ended soon. He expressed his frustration on twitter referencing his ex’s feud with Perry, when fans discovered that Harris and Rihanna’s collaboration “This is what you came for” was secretly written by Swift.

“I know you’re off tour and you need someone new to try and bury like Katy ETC but I’m not that guy,” he wrote.

In response, Perry posted a gif of Hillary Clinton.

September 2016

When a user tweeted at Perry, “Will you collaborate with Taylor swift,” she responded, “If she says sorry, sure!”

May 2017: Perry released Witness

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Perry talked about her new album, Witness, and was asked whether it contains a response to Swift’s “Bad Blood.” She commented that the upcoming record is “very empowered” and that “there is no one thing that’s calling out any one person.”She added: “One thing to note is: You can’t mistake kindness for weakness and don’t come for me. Anyone. anyone, anyone, anyone. And that’s not to any one person and don’t quote me that it is, because it’s not. It’s not about that. Honestly, when women come together and they decide to unite, this world is going to be a better place. Period end of story.”

“Swish Swish” comes off as a diss track with lyrics like, “You’re about as cute as an old coupon expired” and “Your game is tired; you should retire.” However, it is still unclear if it directed at Taylor.

The apology we didn’t expect

In 2017, before the release of her album Witness, Katy Perry apologized to Taylor Swift during a 24-hour YouTube live stream ahead of her album.

“I’m ready to let it go,” she said in an interview.

“Absolutely, 100%. I forgive her, and I’m sorry for anything I ever did, and I hope the same from her, and I think it’s actually – I think it’s time.”

May 2018: An olive branch

Katy Perry sent Taylor Swift an actual olive branch, in order to end the rivalry and tension between the two pop stars.

Swift shared a video of the package she received from Katy – which appeared to include a note with the words “miscommunications” and “deeply sorry” written on it.

June 2019: Cookie love

In order to further strengthen this reconciliation the two singers seem to be hanging out together and baking. This picture of a plate of cookies with “peace at last’ written in red seems to officially indicate they are friends.
