The longest-running British dancing reality television show is back with another instalment with Strictly Come Dancing 2020. Having 17 seasons so far, the show has managed to collect a fervent viewer following since its debut in 2004. The show’s format has always been that it pairs up known celebrities from various popular fields with choreographers who then all compete together in a Latin and ballroom dancing competition; and this year is no different.

Every season, the stars and the choreographers get together to put on a dazzling show filled with mind-blowing performances. And fans have been impatient to see that star-studded gala back on the screen. But, we are pushed to ask, what is different this time?

Strictly Come Dancing 2020

The pandemic has been making quite some changes in the entertainment industry for a while now. While the 2020 season was scheduled to be premiered sometime this year, the plans have been pushed back due to worries around the COVID-19 situation.

The show has been revealed to be premiered sometime around October this year, with The Sun speculating that the date may be the 24th of October; but nothing is sure yet.

The schedule has been speculated to work through the holiday season, with the finale hitting a day in the month of December. It has made a few cutbacks in terms of format due to the pandemic, and we have come to know that the BBC is looking towards lesser screen time to help secure the situation.

In addition to that, the BBC has also confirmed that for this year there will be no Blackpool special airing this year.

Good news to viewers did come however, when the show had released its prospective celebrity line-up for the 2020 edition.

Who is confirmed to appear?

Nicola Adams

There has been much buzz about Nicola’s addition to the show’s line-up. The former boxer has been paired up with a same-sex partner for the upcoming performances.

While there was mild outrage from conventional fans of the show, the show has been adamant about their decision and has since defenced the pairing.

Nicola has thanked the show and the viewers for the opportunity to take part in the show. She has promised that while fans may know her to be fierce within the ring, she will not be any less enthusiastic when it comes to the dance floor.

She has also gone on to thank the BBC for showing her support and by creating the same-sex pairing. Nicola is grateful for the winds of change displayed by the BBC in moving towards support for diversity, change, and breaking boundaries within the entertainment fields.

Bill Bailey

Bill, known dearly to those who enjoy comedy, has been excited to be added to the line-up. Bill said that now more than ever, fans need something new and exciting to watch and cheer for. He is very glad to be able to have to opportunity to bring to the dance floor not only his groovy moves but also his streak for popular comedy. We, too, cannot wait for Bill on the dance floor.

Clara Amfo

The well-sought DJ has long been rumored to be a part of the show. And fans have been proved correct not long ago. Clara is already known to enjoy dancing, and she says, it has proven to be a great way of escapism for her.

She has been hoping that she can bring the same energy to the viewers, and cannot wait to be coached by a professional dancer. She has been excited at the prospect of her long alive fantasy coming true and is excited to embrace the prospect of the competition.

Jamie Laing

The Made in Chelsea star has already been known to take part in the previous year’s edition but had to pull out early due to an injury.

Knowing now that he is a part of the show once again, Jamie has expressed his fervent hope to last longer on the competition, and this time, without hurting himself at all! He is glad to have another opportunity to make his mum proud, which owing to last year’s events did not go as planned.

So, this year, Jamie hopes to have a great experience and to make his mum happy by dancing on television.

JJ Chalmers

Chalmers has, in the past, known to be in the Royal Marine Commando, and has done his fair share of service in Afghanistan.

He had then moved on to turning towards sports, by participating in The Invictus Games and has since been a television sports presenter. JJ feels that the show is a whole new challenge, in terms of sports and otherwise, for him to take on and he is very excited to be taking part in it. What is next to come for JJ, we nor he knows, but the show will definitely tell.

Jacqui Smith

The former Home Secretary has been very excited to be getting back into the dancing game.

She had previously won the bronze medal for Scottish Highland Dancing but that was in the long past. Getting back into the game again is a great opportunity that the show is providing, says Jacqui, and cannot be gladder at the support and presence of the show and its staff.

HRVY

The 21-year old pop star may be the youngest contestant on the show’s line-up this year.

The show’s opportunity came to him as a surprise and he has expressed his gratitude to the show and fans for the spot on the series. Further, he is relieved that his mum would now be able to know where he is every Saturday night!

The Professional Dancers

As exciting as the celebrity line-up is, so is the list of the choreographers for Strictly Come Dancing 2020 who will be paired with the celebs.

As with the past few seasons, the same line-up of professional dancers will be maintained on the show. After news that dancers AJ Pritchard and Kevin Clifton will not be joining the new season, speculations of the other dancers have pointed towards the line-up remaining the same.

So, on the list, from the past seasons, the show will still be retaining Amy Dowden, Dianne Buswell, Gorka Marquez, Janette Manrarra, Karen Hauer, Luba Mushtuk, Nancy Xu, Oti Mabuse, Aljaz Skorjanec, Anton Du Beke, Giovanni Pernice, Graziano Di Prima, Johannes Radebe, Katya Jones, Nadiya Bychkova, Neil Jones, and are all the ones that will be taking part in this year’s edition of the show as well.

Who are the Judges?

The shows previous judges, Shirley Ballas, Motsi Mabuse, and Craig Revel Horwood will be returning for year’s season as well as judges on the show.

However, BBC has stated that former judge Bruno Tonioli will not be reprising his position as a judge on the show due to certain events, and will be forced to miss out on most of the year’s series.

The announcement comes to light with the fact that Bruno is also appearing on the American reality dance show, Dancing with the Stars, and will not be completely replaced from the British show, but simply will appear a lot less.

Previously, Bruno could move back and forth between the US and the UK to take part in both shows but the recent pandemic situation has caused hindrance to such a schedule of his. This means that he will have to cut back on most with either of the two shows.

Whether Bruno will solely take part in the UK show, or stick to only judging the American show, no one knows yet as the details are unclear.

Meanwhile…

The show has put on a special episode called Strictly Come Dancing: The Best Of wherein it takes viewers down memory lane to the week when the show and its contestants had taken part in the movie theme. Premiering on September 19 on BBC One, the special is a way for the show to revisit fans before the official Strictly Come Dancing 2020.

Looking back on iconic performances from the shows, various stars and hosts will be reviewing and reminiscing past performances.

Some fans took to Twitter to say this about the special’s format and what they thought about the look-backs.

As are evident, ardent viewers of the series are not happy with the way BBC decided to format the Best Of special.
While fans were hoping to revisit their favorite past performances, all they were given were short clips and too much commentary.

Fans are hoping that BBC will respond to the critique, and change up the format in the upcoming specials of the Best Of three-part series and that they will get to see the complete routines and not just tiny clips.

While the September 19 special is all about a movie-theme week, the following specials focus on other iconic themes of the show.

September 26 will air its special on the Blackpool Week and on October 3, the viewers will get to watch a reminiscing of musical performances with Strictly Come Dancing: The Best of Musicals.

And this is all that we know of the Strictly Come Dancing 2020 premiere. While the BBC has promised a great show despite the pandemic situation, fans are truly hoping not to be let down while being given what is promised: a season as grand as the ones before.

Let’s wait and watch then!
