Stranger Things star Natalia Dyer expresses her disappointment as blames the media for having oversexualized the younger cast of the series.
The American Sci-Fi Horror tv series Stranger things centers around a group of children teaming up to solve the mysteries behind the strange haunting events in the town. The show started airing in 2016 on Netflix and has since become critically acclaimed and one of the most popular and most watched tv series.
The show’s main cast namely Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink gained immense praise for the portrayal of their respective characters.
Since the younger cast members are teenagers, they have quickly gained popularity among the young masses however their fame has often put them in difficult situations as well. One of them is that they are depicted in inappropriate ways by the media that can be a little on the sexual level.
Natalia Dyer who is best known for her role as Nancy Wheeler in Stranger things brought to light the issue of her teenage costars being oversexualized. She said in an interview with The Independent that she feels that her teenage costars are frequently ‘oversexualized’ by the media .
While answering questions about how the media depicts the younger stars of the series she said the following,
I feel protective over the younger kids even though they’re not kids anymore, they’re teens. They’re all great people and all having to grow up in very crazy circumstances. As a private person, I just feel like, leave people alone – unless you’re talking about their work or what they want to talk about
Dyer believes “It’s a very tricky and complex issue” and describes the sexualization of the teens as a “cultural issue” and adds “there must a bigger concept as to why. Just let people be the people that they are, without any judgment.”
Here are some instances where the cast themselves have spoken over the issue-
Millie Bobby Brown who plays the role of Eleven hits the spotlight the most compared to her co-stars. In 2017, a magazine called W included her on ” a list of reasons why television is sexier than ever.” alongside the likes of many older actors namely Nicole Kidman and James Franco. And she was only 13 years old at the time.
Millie stated that she went through “pain and insecurity” as a young girl due to the constant sexualization by media. She also shared the following Instagram post addressing the issue on her 16th birthday-
16 has felt like a long time coming. i feel like change needs to happen for not only this generation but the next. our world needs kindness and support in order for us children to grow and succeed. the last few years haven’t been easy, I’ll admit that. there are moments i get frustrated from the inaccuracy, inappropriate comments, sexualization, and unnecessary insults that ultimately have resulted in pain and insecurity for me. but not ever will i be defeated. ill continue doing what i love and spreading the message in order to make change.
let’s focus on what needs changing and I hope this video informs you on the things that go on behind the scenes of the headlines and flashing lights.
dont worry I’ll always find a way to smile 😉 leggo 16 ♡.
Even Wolfhard made a statement in November 2017 calling it “gross” how a model made a sexually-charged comment about him when he was just 14 years old.
