Upper East Side popular drama, Gossip Girl, might be about to get taken off Netflix. Gossip Girl is a CW show and it belongs to WarnerMedia. However, WarnerMedia started their own streaming platform, HBO Max, in May 2020. Therefore, they have announced their intentions to take all their content on the parent streaming service. Consequently, the news of Gossip Girl being removed from Netflix started doing the rounds.
Gossip Girl is a drama show with Leighton Meester, Blake Lively and Penn Badgley in lead roles. It started in the year 2007 and ended in 2012 after six highy successful seasons.
Netflix currently has all six seasons streaming on demand on its platform. The show, with all its 121 episodes, has been one of the more popular shows in the platform since it started streaming. Therefore, it would come as a big blow to Netflix when it gets taken off.
When is Gossip Girl Being Removed From Netflix?
The early indications all pointed towards the show being taken off this year itself. HBO Max is a newly released service. Therefore, it was expected that WarnerMedia will release it with all their heavy hitters already on the platform. However, that was not to be the case. Although statements from WarnerMedia confirmed that the show would indeed leave, it has given a time limit of one year. The full statement in part read as follows-
“Soon, the platform offering will continue to grow adding the libraries of Gossip Girl, The West Wing, and more within the first year of launch.”
Therefore, it is clear that adding shows to the service will be a gradual process. However, within the first year of launch means that Gossip Girl will not be removed from Netflix at least until May 2021. Still, there are additional factors in play here when it comes to releasing of Gossip Girl on HBO Max.
The Gossip Girl reboot factor
Many have speculated that the delayed release might be down to the Gossip Girl reboot that is in the works. HBO Max has confirmed that a reboot of the popular show is in the works. Therefore, it would make sense that both the original and the reboot are released in sync with one another. This would help the viewer to relate as well as give the reboot a shot in the arm. The synopsis of the reboot of the show reads-
“Eight years after the original website went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl. The prestige series will address just how much social media — and the landscape of New York itself — has changed in the intervening years.”
Therefore, the show clearly follows from the original. However, the filming has not yet begun which means the release of the show is still some time away. Therefore, Netflix subscribers can take advantage and binge-watch all the episodes of Gossip Girl before the. It is unlikely to be taken off Netflix before the spring of 2021 as that is the earliest date that a release of the reboot would be possible at current pace.
