Chris Evans has dampened fans’ hopes of seeing the actor reprise the iconic role of Captain America by saying that the end has come for him playing the character.
The actor was appearing on The Graham Norton Show where he has asked by the Norton if the last Avengers film really was the end of the road for the Captain America character, Evans replied in the affirmative.
While fans will surely be saddened with this news, Evans give some very valid reasons for his stance. Characters overstaying their welcome in the hearts and minds of the viewers causes the fans to lose interest, or worse, turn on the character and Evans is wary of the same happening to Captain America. He believes that he has had a great run with the character and it would be risky to turn back on such a satisfying ending.
“It was a great run and we went out on such a high note that it would be risky to revisit it in my opinion. It was such a good experience and I think it’s better left that way,” he added. While Evans avoided closing the door completely on the prospect of a return, he made it clear that he would prefer if it didn’t happen. “It’s not a hard no, but it’s not an eager yes either. I think Cap had such a tricky act to stick the landing, and I think that they did a really nice job letting him complete his journey, “Evans had said in Variety’s actor on actor interview last year.
Notably, Captain America was given a definitive ending in Avengers: Endgame, the last movie in the phase of Marvel Cinematic Universe. While other original characters, like Black Widow and Iron Man were also given a full story arc, Black Widow’s solo movie is already scheduled to release and there are rumors of Tony Start appearing in it as well. Therefore, a definitive ending might not mean a full retirement of Captain America.
However, Chris Evans has clear reservations about reprising the role he made iconic in Hollywood. “If you’re going to revisit it, it can’t be a cash grab. It can’t be just because the audience wants to be excited,” said Evans in the same Variety interview with Scarlett Johansson. He has been insistent that there has to be a valid storyline reason to revive the character, maybe through some sort of reveal that would add something substantial to his story.
Therefore, while the fans are unlikely to see the star-spangled hero with his shield on their screens anymore, they can look forward to Marvel Cinematic Universe making them fall in love with new characters and storylines. The studio has earned more than enough fan credit in the bank and newer characters like Doctor Strange, Spiderman and Black Panther have already received huge adulation. Fans will hope that they can carry the legacy of MCU created by original characters like Iron Man, Captain America and Thor.
