A Look At Chadwick Boseman’s Best Movies

Movie buffs across the world are still in shock by the sudden death of actor Chadwick Boseman. Boseman passed away on 28th August 2020 from colon cancer, surrounded by his wife and family. Boseman’s family revealed that he has been battling cancer for four years. Through all this, he maintained a busy schedule which included delivering blockbuster superhero movies as well as critically acclaimed films.

Boseman was active as an actor for 17 years. He amassed an impressive array of roles in that relatively short time and also garnered a huge fanbase. On the big screen, Boseman portrayed Black icons like Jackie Robinson, James Brown, and Thurgood Marshall. He also breathed life into fictional characters and action heroes. 1. 42

Boseman’s breakthrough role as Jackie Robinson in 42 in the year 2013 changed the course of his career.

The film tells the story of Jackie Robinson who was the first Black player to break the color barrier in Major League Baseball. Robinson had to face stiff resistance from racist fans, owners, and even members of his own team Brooklyn Dodgers. Robinson maintains strict control of himself and refrains from any retaliation through all these hardships.

Other cast members included Harrison Ford and Nicole Beharie who gave award-winning performances as Brooklyn Dodgers’ owner Branch Rickey and Robinson’s wife, Rachel respectively. But it’s Boseman’s movie from start to end, and 42 was his star performance.

2. Draft Day

Draft Day largely centered around the personal and professional struggles of Kevin Costner’s Sonny Weaver Jr. Boseman had a small but pivotal role in the movie.

As the Cleveland Browns general manager, Kevin’s character, Weaver, leveraged the team’s future to move up in the NFL draft. Boseman’s character, Vontae Mack forced Weaver to reconsider his choices and also make a public case for himself. Weaver finally realized that Mack was right.

3. Marshall

This movie released in the year 2017. Boseman very effortlessly went from a superhero in Captain America: Civil War, to a real-life hero in his next movie Marshall.

Boseman portrayed Thurgood Marshall, a noted civil rights lawyer and the first Black man to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States. Marshall is a legal drama that takes place early in Thurgood Marshall’s career. In the year 1940, Marshall defends a Black man accused of raping a white woman. But Marshall isn’t allowed to utter a single word in court. This forces him to carefully coach Josh Gad’s character, Sam Friedman with some advice and notes.

4. Black Panther

Black Panther is simply a winner on every level. Boseman’s character King T’Challa was forced to confront what his technologically-advanced nation, Wakanda, owed oppressed Black men and women across the globe.

Michael B. Jordan has an impressive performance as Killmonger, T’Challa’s rival. But Boseman’s performance held the movie together.

It was this iconic movie and character that etched Chadwick Boseman in every single person’s mind in the world irrespective of their age. He also gave kids a new superhero to look up to. This was also the first superhero movie in history to earn a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars.
