A Timeline of Beyonce and Jay-Z’s Relationship

Beyoncé and Jay-Z have had a relationship that has been in the limelight for long. Though they have been through their own share of ups and downs they have always emerged up together as a pair with a renewed sense of love for each other. This is the spirit of Beyoncé and Jay-Z ‘s relationship that we praise and aspire to bring it in our own relationships.

Through their nearly 17 years of romance they have seen it all; from intense and mind-blowing collaborations to infidelity rumors. And we are here to take you through this incredulous journey of  Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s romance.

1999-2000: The year they met

In one of his interviews in 2007, Jay said that he met Beyoncé 10 years ago. Bey too had put it out in an interview with Seventeen that they met each other when she was 18. This means that Jay came into her life probably around 1999-2000. She later told Oprah Winfrey in an OWN interview. “We were on the phone for a year and a half, and that foundation is so important for a relationship. Just to have someone who you just like is so important, and someone [who] is honest.” They were just friends for the first one and a half years.

2001: They started dating

Beyoncé started dating Jay when she was 19. The same year, the pair appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair‘s November 2001 music issue. In an interview with Vanity Fair ten years later, Jay Z said of the shoot; “We were just beginning to try to date each other.” This was the start of Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s relationship.

October 2002: “03 Bonnie And Clyde” was released

JAY-Z released “’03 Bonnie & Clyde,” featuring Beyoncé which went on to become one of the greatest hits of the time. The next month, they filmed the music video in Mexico. Rumours of the two being together also started after the release of this video.

May 2003: “They were crazy in love”

Beyoncé dropped her “Crazy/Drunk in Love” music video featuring JAY-Z, which received the Best R&B Song and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration awards at the 2004 Grammy Awards. The album fueled the rumors of them being together but they hadn’t gone public yet.

Bey and Jay were seen together a lot towards the end of 2003 as industry events and sports games

August 2004: The rumours are confirmed

The pair made their red carpet debut together as a couple in these very-early-2000s outfits at the 2004 MTV VMAs in Miami and the relationship rumors of Beyoncé and Jay-Z were confirmed.

2006: More collabs and a future wedding maybe

In September, Beyoncé drops her second solo LP, B’Day, on her 25th birthday. The chart-topper included two more collabs with JAY-Z: “Déjà Vu” and “Upgrade U.”

JAY-Z releases Kingdom Come, which includes yet another Beyoncé duet, “Hollywood,” in November.

Jay Z poured his heart out when he released ‘Lost One’ in 2006.

“I don’t think it’s meant to be, B / But she loves her work more than she does me / And honestly, at 23 / I would probably love my work more than I did she” Jay Z rapped. Was there trouble in paradise?

Beyoncé told Cosmopolitan magazine in a 2006 interview that she had a wedding on her mind.

“It’s hilarious. I don’t know when I’ll want to get married. I never pictured myself as a bride, but after my sister’s wedding, I did start thinking about what kind of wedding I’d want. I don’t think I want a big one.”

April 2008: They finally tie the knot

Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s marriage took place in a top-secret, ceremony on April 4. No photos or videos of the ceremony were released then. Their marriage was made public later by Beyoncé at one of her listening parties of her newly released album.

Instead of exchanging rings, they both got match IV tattoos on their wedding fingers. The reason they didn’t get engagement rings; “People put too much emphasis on that. It’s just material, and it’s just silly to me”, she said in one of her interviews to Essence Magazine.

In the same year, she dropped her iconic anthem to matrimony (or lack thereof), “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).” The singer released her third studio album, I Am… Sasha Fierce, in October 2008.

January 2009: Sang at Obama’s swearing-in ceremony

Another iconic stage in this relationship, Beyoncé and Jay-Z attended President Barack Obama’s first inauguration on January 20, 2009, where Beyonce performed “America the Beautiful.” Later, at the inaugural ball, she sang Etta James’ classic ballad “At Last” for the president’s dance with First Lady Michelle Obama. Sang at Obama’s swearing-in ceremony

2010 – 2011: Pregnant but unfortunately miscarried

Beyoncé took a bit of a break from public life, so rumors swirled that she was pregnant. In her 2013 HBO documentary Life Is But a Dream, she revealed that she had once been pregnant but miscarried.

“About two years ago, I was pregnant for the first time,” she said in the doc. “And I heard the heartbeat, which was the most beautiful music I ever heard in my life.”

August 2011: The iconic moment of them expecting again

Beyoncé revealed she is pregnant at the MTV VMAs in L.A. Cradling her baby bump on the red, she told the audience during her “Love on Top” performance, “I want you to stand up on your feet. I want you to feel the love that’s growing inside me.”

January 2012: Baby Ivy is born

The couple’s daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, was born on January 7, 2012. JAY-Z released “Glory,” a song dedicated to his daughter, which revealed that the couple had suffered a miscarriage prior to Blue’s birth.

“Last time the miscarriage was so tragic / We was afraid you’d disappear / But nah, baby, you magic.”

Bey and Jay introduce Blue Ivy, sharing the first photos of their daughter on Mom’s Tumblr. “We welcome you to share in our joy. Thank you for respecting our privacy during this beautiful time in our lives,” the Carter family wrote online.

2013: Life is but a dream.

Beyoncé’s documentary “Life Is But a Dream” aired on HBO where she revealed her pregnancy difficulties, showed clips of her wedding. The film concluded with footage of her cradling Blue Ivy and spending time with family.

Beyonce released her eponymous fifth studio album without any prior announcement or promotion. The song “Drunk in Love” was positioned no. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and also won the GRAMMY Awards for Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance.

2014: The elevator incident

Footage emerged of Solange attacking Jay Z in an elevator. It’s unclear why the fight went down, but it’s rumored that it had something to do with Solange finding out about Jay’s alleged infidelities.

There were a lot of rumours of a break up in the relationship of Beyoncé and Jay-Z but the couple solved it all. 

Musically, the two were as strong as ever when they released ‘Part II (On The Run).’

“Who wants a perfect love story anyway?” Beyoncé asks in the song’s opening line which sees them head back to their Bonnie and Clyde ways. They would be embarking on a collaborative tour called ‘On The Run’ throughout the US and stopping in Paris

2016: Lemonade was released

Beyoncé’s visual album “Lemonade” premiered on HBO which was full of lyrics describing infidelity and seemingly confirmed to the world that Jay-Z had been unfaithful.

February 2017: They are expecting twins

She dropped a gorgeous announcement on Instagram that she and Jay were expecting twins. The pair released a new joint album called Everything Is Love in London.

On June 13, Beyoncé gave birth to Rumi and Sir.

Jay released his comeback album “4:44” with lyrics that references an affair and miscarriages.

2018: They go on the tour again

JAY-Z and Beyoncé announced an ‘On The Run II’ Tour for 2018.

After rumours began circulating, JAY-Z and Beyoncé announced they’d be heading out on a joint tour, hitting the UK in June 2018. Called ‘On The Run II’, it’s the pair’s first tour together since 2014.

They also renewed their wedding vows in a ceremony.

2019: They were awarded for their joint album at the 2019 BRIT Awards

JAY-Z and Beyoncé won a BRIT Award for ‘Best International Group’ for their joint album. Bey and Jay paid tribute to Meghan Markle by accepting the Royal Princess dressed as the Mona Lisa.
